The Joro Spider and My golden web

About a month ago, I noticed a golden web outside my window. Mesmerized by its creation, my eyes found their way to its creator, the Joro spider. After raving about it for what seemed like fifteen minutes, I immediately Googled its spiritual meaning. I couldn’t help but turn my attention back to my spider friend. Still in awe of its color scheme—bright yellow and black with a hint of red—my eyes then traced the golden fortress surrounding it. How could something so enchanting

Pulling up through my grandmas little town and seeing her indigo blue porch. Waiting for her to come to the door and welcome us to her warm embrace. I have so many fond memories of her and that porch, with my cousins, aunties, and uncles. Gathering, laughing, teaching and being.

With the rapid growth of apartments and townhouses…the essence of the porch is slowly becoming a thing of the past. Back then inner cities still had porches too. The energy from the porch would then flow into the streets, creating a neighborhood celebration. Great food, good music, and soulful experiences. Continue to keep the porch warm.

Earlier this year, I got the chance to take my first solo trip to the Big Apple 🍎✨.

During my short visit, I had some of the BEST tour guides @yannibk and @khemii who made sure I got the real, raw Brooklyn, New York experience! From culture to food, they made sure my 72 hours were unforgettable.

One of my favorite moments was sitting in on a studio session where @khmeii and @iamsiobhvn gave me a special treat, an early listen to their new song “Breath Me” produced by @adrianisntadub dropping next Friday, Oct 31st. 🎶

It’s always an honor to be invited in as a viewer of the process—taking in their lessons, soaking up their energy, and finding new ways to apply it to my own passion projects.

During the session, Khemii and her dream team talked about the life of a creative—and how at the end of the day, the obstacles we face are just small distractions keeping us from the bigger picture.

Brooklyn definitely left its mark on me 🖤

Last Saturday, I had the chance to see @angelicregalia x @marietheefairy very first art exhibition, Lumen’s Gate — a solo exhibition at that.

Jaylin and I have crossed paths many times before, and she’s always carried this dazzling light within her. We had the opportunity to sit and chat last year when she was featured in our second issue, Stage & Canvas: Stories of Local Visionaries. During our discussion, we talked about her upbringing and how being a creative has always been at the forefront of her life. So, when I found out she was hosting her very FIRST solo exhibit, I had to show my support for her journey.

It’s not easy putting yourself out into the world in such a grand way, so to witness her journey firsthand was more than inspiring. I felt a liberating energy take over me, placing me in a space of wanting to create even more. Thank you, Jaylin, for sharing your soul and your light with us. The world needs more of it. In January I had the opportunity to visit the GIANTS exhibit during its last weekend at the @highmuseumofart !

I was literally fighting to go! If you missed it you truly did miss out seeing some amazing work from trailblazers in the artistic community. Everything was so profound I can hardly put it into words. Just magical, black girl/boy magic to be exact!

Very grateful that @aliciakeys and @therealswizzz volunteered their personal collection @thedeancollection to be shared with the world! I hope to be able to see these pieces again someday 💛.

As we enter this new month of the last quarter, I would like to take time out to bring awareness to the intense energy of the world and events that have happened this year and past few days. 2024 has been one filled with loss, heartache, sacrifices…as well as realizing the importance of community, our voices, power in numbers, and love. Even with everything crashing down around us, it’s our responsibility to keep lending a hand when needed and stay resilient throughout it all. It is us who makes OUR world go round. We must keep striving for the betterment of all 🌎. I hope October brings everyone nothing but blessings and joy ✨.

I was able to spend my Tuesday day night with @themixerintl at @jbsrecord! A night filled with soulful music and soulful energy.

There I learned that only 3% of records stores are black owned! For the longest, black people have been at the forefront of the music industry even when we were forced to the back, our influence was TOO strong to go unnoticed. This is why the perseverance of physical media has been my focus lately. It’s up to us to keep supporting our locals in the creative community.
